RTP explained: what return to player actually measures
RTP — return to player — is the most quoted statistic in gambling and the most widely misread. A 96% RTP does not mean you keep 96% of your money. It does not mean a session ends 4% down. It does not describe your night at all.
It describes the game, averaged over a horizon far longer than any human plays. Here is what the number actually says, and what it deliberately leaves out.
The definition
RTP is the proportion of total wagers a game returns as winnings over an arbitrarily long run of play. A game with 96% RTP pays back 96 credits for every 100 wagered, and keeps 4. That 4% is the house edge, and the two numbers always sum to 100%.
It is a property of the paytable and the odds, not of a player, a session, or a machine's recent history. Two people playing the same game at the same RTP for the same number of rounds will get different results and share the same expectation.
Theoretical RTP versus empirical RTP
Two different numbers travel under the same name, and confusing them is the source of most arguments about whether a game is "paying".
- Theoretical RTP is computed from the game's rules. Enumerate every outcome, weight each by its probability, multiply by its payout, and sum. It is exact, it is knowable before a single round is played, and it never changes unless the rules do.
- Empirical RTP is what actually came back over a finite number of rounds: total returned divided by total wagered. It is a measurement, and like any measurement it carries noise.
Empirical RTP converges on theoretical RTP as rounds accumulate. Over 100 rounds it is nearly meaningless. Over a million it is tight. The gap between the two on a short run is not evidence of anything; it is the definition of variance.
How much play the number actually needs
RTP is a long-run limit, and "long run" in a casino context means far more rounds than a person plays in a lifetime of casual sessions. The rougher the game's payout structure, the longer it takes.

A high-volatility slot can sit thousands of rounds below its stated RTP and still be working exactly as designed, because the bulk of its return is concentrated in rare outcomes that simply have not happened yet.
Why 96% RTP still empties a bankroll
The trap in RTP is the denominator. The 4% missing from a 96% game is taken from everything wagered, not from what you deposited — and money you win is wagered again.
Start with 100 credits at 1 credit per round on a 96% game. Each round costs 0.04 credits in expectation. After 2,500 rounds you have wagered 2,500 credits, and the expected cost is 100: your whole starting bankroll, recycled through the game about twenty-five times. RTP is quoted per unit wagered because that is the only honest way to state it. Read as "how much of my deposit survives," it is wildly optimistic.
RTP says nothing about volatility
Two games at identical RTP can produce completely different experiences, because RTP is an average and averages discard shape.
Consider two 96% games. The first pays 0.96 credits back on nearly every 1-credit round: near-zero volatility, a slow steady bleed, and an empirical RTP that locks onto 96% almost immediately. Where the number comes from
In regulated markets, RTP is certified by independent testing labs that model the game mathematically and run large simulations against the production build. Jurisdictions differ on whether the figure has to be shown to players, and many operators publish it only in help screens.
Table games are different: their RTP falls out of published rules, so anyone can compute it. Blackjack is the clearest case — the return depends on the rule set and on how well the player plays, which is why the same game is quoted anywhere from 99.5% down to 97%.
