The difference is volatility, and it is the setting most often mistaken for generosity. Here is what it changes on the reels, what it does not, and why the pair of numbers has to be read together.
Two independent numbers
A slot's behaviour is described by two figures that people routinely collapse into one.
- RTP is the share of total wagers returned over the long run — the average. Covered in full in what is RTP.
- Volatility (or variance) describes the spread around that average: how often wins land and how large they are when they do.
They are genuinely independent. You can build a 96% game with almost no variance and a 96% game that is effectively a lottery, and a player who only reads the RTP cannot tell them apart.
What volatility changes on the reels
A mechanical slot is a set of reel strips. Each strip is a fixed sequence of stops, and a spin selects one stop per reel uniformly at random. The probability of any combination is countable: how many stop-triples produce it, over the total number of triples.
Take a three-reel game with 22 stops per reel — the classic mechanical layout, and the one LarpCasino uses. There are 22³ = 10,648 possible outcomes. A symbol appearing once on each strip lines up in exactly one of them, so it is a 1-in-10,648 shot. A symbol appearing four times per strip lines up 64 ways, or about 1 in 166.
The paytable then assigns a payout to each winning combination, subject to one constraint: the sum of probability × payout across every combination must equal the target RTP. Volatility is the freedom left inside that constraint.

Why high volatility feels rigged
On a high-volatility game, the typical result is much worse than the average result, because the average is dragged upward by rare outcomes most sessions never see.
If a large share of a game's return sits in a combination that hits once in several thousand spins, then a thousand-spin session usually ends well below the stated RTP. Not sometimes — usually. The players who hit it end far above. Both groups played the same honest game, and only one of them believes it.
This is also why short-run empirical RTP is close to worthless as evidence. A high-volatility game can sit tens of thousands of spins under its theoretical figure while working exactly as certified.
Hit frequency is not the same thing
